X-Women basketball welcomes Mairead Dunn

ANTIGONISH, NS – StFX women’s basketball head coach Augy Jones is pleased to welcome Mairead Dunn to the X-Women program for the 2013-14 season, a 6’4” post player from Sarnia, Ont..

“We are very pleased to announce Mairead as our first committed recruit for the 2013-14 season,” comments Coach Jones. “We have a focused approach to adding players to our team and we were in need of a tall, talented post player and Mairead is exactly who we were looking for.”

“She has an excellent shooting touch, is a willing passer from the post, and has the ability to block shots without fouling on defense. Most importantly, Mairead has a passion for basketball and is committed to improving her game within our program. This is a perfect fit for both the Dunn family and the X family.”

Dunn is a product of the JUEL Ontario basketball league, Canada’s only provincial spring league, playing for St. Clair. Going into its second season, JUEL allows 18 teams from all over Ontario to compete in elite level basketball outside of the traditional high school setting. The players in the JUEL league are the best grade 11’s and 12’s in the province.

Dunn attends St. Christopher Catholic Secondary School, where she won the most valuable player and leadership award in her grade 10 season. She also played in the Greg Grant basketball club.

“This is an experience that is going to shape my life for the next four to five years,” comments Dunn, who will be majoring in sociology in the Arts program at StFX this fall. “Coach Jones welcomed me with open arms and made me feel at ease, as did the girls on the team. They were all very welcoming and friendly and made me feel as if I was already a part of the X-Women team.”

“I would like to thank all my family and friends for their support during my basketball career,” continues Dunn. “I would like to sincerely thanks the coaches I have had in the past, especially Peter Chapman, Andy MacKay, Brett Braekevelt, and Andrew Taylor, without them I would not have made it this far. I can't wait to start this adventure of a life time at StFX.”
