X-Women fall short to Capers

The Cape Breton Capers were able to use their home court advantage and march to a decisive 84-56 victory over the StFX X-Women Wednesday night in Cape Breton, NS. Cassie Cooke, currently second in AUS scoring, tallied a game-high 30 points in the victory for the Capers. Donisha Young was the high scorer for the X-Women with 14 points in the loss.

The first half saw both teams going back and forth trying to gain control of the game. The Capers held the edge in the first quarter as they outscored the X-Women 20-14. Cooke had nine points in the first quarter for the Capers. The X-Women were than able to gain control of the game in the second quarter as they outscored the Capers 19-18. Donisha Young had six points in the quarter to get the X-Women back in the game. The score was 38-33 for the Capers at half time. 

The second half was when the Capers really took control, as they poured on the pressure in the third and fourth quarters to distance themselves from StFX. Cape Breton outscored the X-Women 21-14 in the third quarter and then 25-9 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Cooke cashed in 16 of her 30 points in the final two quarters as the Capers pulled away with an 84-56 victory.

Jahlica Kirnon scored 11 points and had six rebounds and four steals for the Capers, while Vicki Thistle and Kayla McCarron each contributed 10 points apiece. Stephanie Toxopeus scored nine points and had 10 rebounds.

Replying for the X-Women was Young who had a double-double evening with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Rebecca Sheehan scored 12 points and added four assists and three steals, while Kolbi Roper scored 10.

The Capers shot 38.5% from field goal range, 17.6% from the three point line and 84% from the free throw line. The X-Women were 35.5% from field goal range, 30.8% from three point range and 61.5% from the free throw line.

With the victory the Capers remain in second place in the AUS standings with a 12-5 record and 34 points, four back of first place Acadia. The X-Women remain in sixth spot with an 8-9 record and 18 points and are two points shy of fifth place Dalhousie.

StFX will travel to Newfoundland this coming Saturday and Sunday, February 18-19 for two important four point games against the fourth place Memorial SeaHawks (9-7). The Capers will resume action in Halifax this Saturday to take on the Dalhousie Tigers.
