Kirsten Jones of the StFX X-Women’s basketball team is the Atlantic University Sport Subway Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 5, 2012. Jones, a fifth-year Science student from Scarborough, Ont., registered a pair of double-doubles in two important road wins over the UNB Varsity Reds this past weekend as the X-Women moved past the V-Reds in the AUS standings and into the sixth and final playoff spot. They now sit just two points out of fifth place, with six games remaining in the regular season. In Friday’s 82-52 win, Kirsten scored 22 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and added two steals in front of a UNB season-high 782 fans. In Saturday’s rematch, a 71-65 victory, the 5-foot-11 senior registered her second double-double of the weekend and her fourth of the season with a 10-point, 11-rebound performance that included two blocks and two assists. Jones is averaging 15.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.11 blocks per game this season for the X-Women, ranking her in the top 10 in the AUS conference in all three categories.

Jared Gomes of the CIS No. 8-ranked UPEI Panthers men’s hockey team is the Atlantic University Sport Subway Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 5, 2012. Gomes, a third-year forward from Mississauga, Ont., scored four goals and added an assist in UPEI’s two road wins this past weekend as the Panthers improved to 17-8-0 and moved into third place in the AUS standings. In Friday’s 5-2 win over the Dalhousie Tigers, the 2009-10 CIS rookie of the year registered the second hat-trick of his university career, including the game-winner. In Saturday night’s 6-1 win over the CIS No. 9-ranked Acadia Axemen in Wolfville, Gomes scored a goal and added an assist to complete the five-point weekend. Jared, who played for Sarnia and Mississauga of the OHL prior to attending UPEI, now has 20 goals and 10 assists this season for 30 points, ranking him third overall in the Atlantic conference. His 20 goals scored leads the conference and is tied for second in the nation.
