The familiar St. F.X. blue and white will include a shade of pink this week-end at Oland Centre.

The X-Women volleyball and basketball teams will host their annual breast cancer research and awareness fundraisers.

The Serve for the Cure will take centre stage Friday evening at 7 p.m. when the X-Women host the Acadia Axewomen in AUS volleyball action.

Saturday, the basketball X-Women will stage their Drive for the Cure, which coincides with their match-up against the UNB Varsity Reds at 6 p.m.

“There are so many girls on our team that have been affected by breast can-cer. It really hits home for us,” X-Women basketball player Camesha MacKenzie said.

The veteran leader said everyone involved with the team gets excited about helping with and raising aware-ness about such a worthy cause.

X-Women volleyball team captains Katherine Ryan and Heather Isenor agreed.
“We really hope as many people as possible can come out and support us,” Isenor said.

Ryan added it is a tremendous cause, one that should be particularly appro-priate for women in sports to support.

“We want to help do what we can to spread awareness,” she said.
At each game, members of both X teams will include pink as part of their school colours. The trio of student-leaders encouraged fans to do the same.

“It’s great when so many fans decide to wear pink as well. It is a great sign of support,” Ryan said.

During the match-ups, volunteers will also be accepting donations for breast cancer research. Commemo-rative pink T-shirts and caps will be sold.

X-Women volleyball head coach Michelle Aucoin, who has led the team for five years, said her players embrace the event.

“It’s an important part of our program. Our players and everyone involved with the team look forward to it each year,” she said.

The fundraisers will benefit the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
