X-Women Baskeball Defeated by UNB

The top-ranked teams in the Atlantic university women’s basketball championships will meet in today’s final in St. John’s.

The No. 1 seed Cape Breton Capers defeated the host Memorial Sea-Hawks 72-66 in the early semifinal Saturday afternoon. The Capers will face the No. 2 UNB Varsity Reds, who upended the St. Francis Xavier X-Women 78-58 in the other semifinal on Saturday.

Cape Breton and UNB each had quarter-final byes in the AUS tournament. The final is slated to begin today at 1 p.m. AT.

Capers 72, Sea-Hawks 66: Jahlica Kirnon scored 19 points to pace Cape Breton, which trailed by three at the half.

CBU went on a 19-11 run in the third quarter and then held on.

Kari Everett had 12 points and Stephanie Toxopeus added 10 for the Capers.

Brittany Dalton led all scorers with 21 points for Memorial.

Varsity Reds 78, X-Women 58: The Corby sisters were too much for St. F.X.

Leah Corby collected 23 points and Megan Corby had 10 assists to lead UNB.

Claire Colbourne added 17 points and five rebounds for the Varsity Reds.

Kirsten Jones answered with 13 points for the X-Women, who were down by a dozen at the half.
