X-Women Come Back to Beat Varsity Reds in Double-Overtime Basketball Thriller

The St. Francis Xavier X-Women raced back from an early hole to beat the UNB Varsity Reds 96-93 in double overtime Saturday in AUS women’s basketball in Fredericton.

UNB led 19-12 after the first quarter and 39-29 at the half before St. F.X. scrapped back with a 22-10 third-quarter sprint.

Sheryl Chisholm had 21 points for the X-Women while Ashley Stephen added 19 and Donisha Young 16.

Stephen also had 12 boards, six steals and seven assists.

Amanda Sharpe had 35 points and 10 rebounds for UNB. Leah Corby had 20 points and Claire Colborne 19.

The X-Women are 9-4 and have won three straight. UNB is 8-4 after three straight losses, two to St. F.X.

Tigers 74, Sea-Hawks 71: At Dalplex, five players reach double digits in points as host Dalhousie squeaked past Memorial.

Courtney Thompson led the Tigers with 18 points. Brooke Sullivan scored 15, Anna von Maltzahn had 13, Tia Gerwatoski 12 and Stephanie Hiltz netted 11.

Alexandria Forsey was top scorer for MUN with 15 points.

Tigers 106, Sea-Hawks 59: At Dalplex, Simon Farine had 22 points and William Yengue and Peter Leighton each added 20 as Dal demolished Memorial.

Justin Grainger answered with 16 points and Lower Sackville’s Robbie Habib added 15 for the Sea-Hawks.

X-Men 102, Varsity Reds 85: At Fredericton, Christian Upshaw collected a game-high 28 points as St. F.X. slipped past UNB.

Andrew Wright had 26 for the V-Reds.
