X-Women Knock Off National Ranked Varsity Reds

The StFX X-Women regrouped from a tough loss earlier in the week to the CBU Capers to knock of the CIS No. 5 ranked UNB Varsity Reds 91-73 Saturday evening in Antigonish.

The game was never close as the X-Women dominated every quarter including the second and third quarter where they held UNB to a combined 26 points.

The first quarter was a big one for the X-Women who jumped out to a high scoring 28-21 lead. The uptempo pace of StFX’s offence couldn’t be matched by UNB, and with Coach Skinn recognizing that, the tempo never slowed down.

The second quarter was when the X-Women pulled away, doubling up on UNB with a 22-11 quarter which put them in the lead by 18 at the half.

The second half was better for UNB as they kept the scores of each quarter close, including winning the fourth by three points, but the late rally simply wasn’t enough to claw back for the win.

It was a balanced attack for the X-Women who saw five players score in double figures, but nobody played better on either side than StFX’s Donisha Young who finished the game as the leading scorer with 24 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the field to go along with her 11 rebounds. In her first year at X, Young has proven to be a huge factor the X-Women in the paint, defending well and creating serious matchup problems for all opposing teams.

Ashley Stephen posted a double-double game as well for the X-Women with 16 points and 12 rebounds while Kirsten Jones had 14 points and 8 boards. Sheryl Chisholm scored 11 for the blue and white and Camesha McKenzie contributed1 10 points.

UNB was lead by Claire Colborne who netted 22 points while Amanda Sharpe was the next leading scorer with 15.

The X-Women (7-4) now set their sights to Wednesday night when they take on the Saint Mary’s Huskies (7-7) in Halifax.
