Corbit named AUS Track Athlete of the Year with 3 gold medals

X-Men indoor track veteran runner John Corbit took home two individual and one relay gold medal at this year’s AUS championship in Moncton, earning him the AUS Track Athlete of the Year award.

The triple gold medalist won the 1000m, 1500m and was a member of the X-Men gold medal 4x800m relay team. Corbit ran to first place in the 1000m event in a time of 2:28.78 and in the 1500m race posted a 3:56.31. He has been undefeated in the 1000m race in AUS competition this year.

Also competing in the 1000m race for StFX was Kyle Tramble (2:39.95) who placed 5th overall and Kenton Sportak (2:40.77) who was 7th. In the 1500m, Petr Doubravsky picked up the silver medal, finishing with a time of 3:58.72 right behind his teammate Corbit. Connor MacGuire (4:09.16) had a strong 4th place showing and Sportak was 6th with a time of 4:13.86.

In the 3000m race, Doubravsky picked up his second medal of the championship with a gold place showing, running in a time of 8:46.47. MacGuire picked up the bronze with a time of 9:04.19.

In the sprint events, the X-Men had four runners competing in the 60m dash. Cauchy Muamba posted the fastest time for X with 7.39 seconds, good enough for 5th spot. Dylan Hollohan (7.46) was 8th, followed by Connor Demone (7.58) in 9th and Derek Munden (7.68) in 10th.

In the 300m race, John MacLellan picked up a 7th place showing with a time of 38.54. burden also competed as was 11th at 39.73 while Nathaniel Minichiello was 12th at40.20 seconds.

Minichiello, Ryan Hawkrigg, Stuart MacNeil and Tramble all ran the 600m race had placed 5th through 8th, respectively. Minichiello’s time in 5th spot was 1:29.21, followed by Hawkrigg (1:30.35), MacNeil (1:30.71) and Tramble (1:33.75).

StFX fielded teams in each of the three relay races and took home a gold and two bronze. The gold-medal winning 4x800m relay team finished with a time of 8:16.54, ahead of second place Dalhousie (8:31.88) and third place Saint Mary’s (8:32.53). Team members included Corbit, Doubravsky, Sportak and Tramble.

The X-Men 4x200m relay team of Muamba, Minichiello, MacLellan and Burden won the bronze medal, finishing with a time of 1:38.46. Dalhousie came first (1:34.35), followed by Moncton (1:38.21).

\r\n

The 4x400m relay team also picked up bronze, again behind Dalhousie (3:35.19) and Moncton (3:35.30). Team members Minichiello, MacNeil, Hawkrigg and Sportak crossed the finish line in 3:42.40 minutes.
 
The X-Men did not have any athletes competing in the 60m hurdles, nor in any of the jumping events.

Stewart Walsh was the lone thrower for the X-Men squad and he did well, winning silver medals in both the shot put and weight throw. Walsh’s shot put throw was 13.62m, while he scored 12.15m in the weight throw.

Overall the X-Men won 4 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals as they were runner-ups to AUS champion Dalhousie in the overall team competition.

John Corbit earned recognition as the AUS Male Track Athlete of the Year while Connor MacGuire was the co-winner of the AUS Male Rookie of the Year award.

Corbit and Doubravsky each posted qualifying times for the CIS championship taking place March 11-14 at Windsor University. Corbit qualified in the 1000m and 1500m, while Doubravsky will be travelling to Ontario to run the 1500m and 3000m races. Joining them at the national championship for the 4x800m relay race will be teammates Tramble and Sportak.
