X-Men place second at AUS Track & Field Championship

The StFX X-Men track and field team concluded a their season with a second place showing at the Subway AUS Championship this past weekend in Moncton, NB. The X-Men racked in seven medals in total collecting three gold and four silver for a total of 61 points. Dalhousie claimed the AUS championship banner with 174 total team points while Saint Mary’s was third with 58.

Connor McGuire and Max Maund were the two individual stars of the day for the X-Men as they combined for four of the seven medals, with Maund in on two more as a relay team participant.

McGuire, the 2011 AUS individual cross country champion, earned two gold medals, finishing first in both the 1500m and 3000m races. He is the two-time defending AUS champion in the 3000m event. Maund, also a key member of the X-Men soccer team, won gold in the 300m dash, silver in the 600m run, along with silver medals in both the 4x200m and 4x400m relay races.

Joining Maund on the 4x200m relay team were Chad Samson, Conor Kyte and Jide Ojuawo, while Alex Vanderlinden, Stu MacNeil and Ben Gunn-Doerge comprised the 4x400m relay team along with the anchor Maund. The silver medal performance in 4x400m relay race was a close finish over third place Saint Mary’s which helped edge the X-Men over the same Huskies in the overall team standings into their second place performance.

The relays emerged as strong events for StFX as they received their final silver medal in the 4x800m relay when Gabe Quenneville, Riley Johnston, Ben Gunn-Doerge and Bryden Tate led the blue and white to a second place finish.

Third year X-Men runner Zach MacDonald was honored as the male recipient of the AUS Student-Athlete Community Service award.
