X-Women track opens season at Moncton meet

The StFX track and field team got off to a pretty good start this season. Moncton played host to the first meet of the season and both the men’s and women’s teams had top finishers in multiple events.

The X-Women sent 22 athletes to the first meet and had a strong showing. In the 1000, 1500 and 3000 metre races, it was mainly the blue and white as only two of the athletes were not represented by StFX. Kelly MacDonald captured first place in the 3000m, followed in order by teammates Helena Fiore, Bree Bates, Amanda Hardwick and Tansey Summers-Lubar. In the 1500m, MacDonald finished in second, while Breana Langley, Fiore, Bates, Flynn Regan and Erin MacNeil finished third through seventh respectively.

Paula MacDonald, sister of Kelly, kept it in the family by winning the 1000 metre race in a time of three minutes 26 seconds. Langley (2nd), Regan (4th), MacNeil (5th) and Dee Smith (6th) also grabbed spots for the X-Women. MacDonald also won the 600 metre race, which saw only three competitors and each one from X. Celeste Black finished second and Smith finished third.

StFX had a handful of runners in the 300 metre dash. Top finisher for the X-Women was Katie Scanell in second place, while Eugenia Renderos (4th) and Black (5th) each had a top five finish. Janet MacLeod (7th), Trina Kennedy (8th), Kattherine Barnstead (9th) and Jill Kiley (12th) rounded out the rest of the competition for X. Renderos also finished 6th in the 60 metre preliminaries and missed the final by only .08 of a second with a time of 8.28. Kiley and Louise Delany also did not qualify for the X-Women.

The only other track event for the X-Women was the 4x200m relay in which they finished first.

On the field, StFX was led by Maired Davidson and Rebecca Bell. Davidson won the triple jump event with Bell finishing in 6th and over in the long jump, Bell would grab the 5th spot with Davidson right behind her in 6th. Chantal Paris was the only other athlete for the X-Women in a field event and she finished a solid 2nd in the shot put.
