X tracksters take home 18 AUS medals

Feb 27, 2008 - The StFX indoor track team had their best ever showing at an AUS championship this past weekend as both the men’s and women’s teams finished in second place overall in the league’s final meet in Moncton. The StFX squad came home with 3 gold, 10 silver and 5 bronze medals with Gina Stewart, Sarah Skotty and Derek Osmun all winning individual races and individual AUS titles. Stewart was the champion of the women’s 1500m event, finishing with a time of 4:40.55 while teammate Skotty won the 3000m race in a time of 9:59.14. Stewart won the silver medal behind her at 10:04.71 and qualified to compete in both the 1500m and 3000m races at the CIS championship taking place March 6-8 at McGill University in Montreal. Skotty will also compete at the CIS championship in the 3000m event. Derek Osmun won the men’s 60m sprint in a time of 7.12 seconds, becoming the first sprinter to ever win a gold medal for StFX. When all was said and done, the X-Women finished the meet with 74 points, good enough for second place overall behind Dalhousie’s 148. On the men’s side, the team standings came right down to the final race with the X-Men edging out the Saint Mary’s Huskies 53 points for second place with 57 overall. Dalhousie took the men’s team title with 140 points overall. StFX track coach Bernie Chisholm was named co-winner of the AUS Women’s Track Coach of the Year.
