X-Men drop 2-0 decision to Varsity Reds in AUS soccer action
The UNB Varsity Reds scored a 2-0 win over the StFX X-Men Friday evening in Antigonish.

More than 500 fans turned out for the Homecoming game at Oland Stadium.

Jason Bessey, Subway player of the game, opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a low shot that beat second-year goalkeeper Sam Hutchison, who made his third start of the season, to the right side. Veteran keeper Andrew MacDonald remains on the sidelines with a chest injury suffered versus the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

At halftime, in a sideline interview with the StFX Varsity Club webcast, X-Men head coach Graham Kennedy said decision making had to improve on the back end.

Yousuf Mohammad extended the lead to 2-0 in the 75th minute with a spectacular one-time goal off a Varsity Reds’ corner kick.

That marker came after the blue and white had several opportunities to tie the score, including a couple of hit cross bars and shots that sailed high or wide.

The X-Men also threatened on corner kicks, especially off work by the combination of Randy Ribeiro, the player of the game for his team, and freshman Michael Al-Assadi.

With the win, the Varsity Reds improve to 2-3-1, while the X-Men fall to 2-3-1.

The blue and white will return to action Sunday when they host the Cape Breton University Capers. Game time is 6:15 p.m. at Oland Stadium.
