Vlk and Harvey earn AUS Athlete of the Week recognition

Martin Vlk of the CIS No. 9-ranked StFX X-Men soccer team is the Atlantic University Sport Subway Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 11th, 2011. Vlk, a first-year midfielder from Zatec, Czech Republic, scored the first two goals of his university career in the X-Men’s 4-3 come-from-behind road victory over the Acadia Axemen Sunday afternoon in Wolfville. After falling behind by a score of 3-1 just 30 minutes into the contest, Martin found the back of the net late in the first half to pull the X-Men to within a goal. He then added the game-tying goal midway through the second half as StFX went on to complete the comeback with an exciting 4-3 win. Vlk, an Arts student, is tied for the league lead in scoring after the first weekend of play.

Fullback Magali Harvey of the CIS No. 1-ranked and defending CIS champion StFX women’s rugby team is the Atlantic University Sport Subway Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 11th, 2011. Harvey, a second year Arts student from Quebec City scored 25 points in the X-Women’s 60-12 season-opening home win over the No. 10-ranked Acadia Axewomen on Sunday. Magali, the 2010 AUS rookie of the year, scored two tries, successfully booted six conversions and added a penalty goal as the X-Women picked up their first victory of the season. Harvey, also named a 2010 CIS all-Canadian, led the AUS conference in scoring last season with 86 points.
