Soccer X-Men come from behind to defeat Acadia

The CIS ranked No. 9 X-Men soccer team started off the AUS season with a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Acadia Axemen Sunday afternoon in Wolfville, NS.

Defender Miro Novak scored the game winner for StFX late in the game in the 85th to seal the win and freshman midfielder Martin Vlk contributed two goals.

The X-Men saw themselves facing an uphill battle after down by a 3-1 score 30 minutes into the game. Veteran forward Michael Marousek led off the scoring in the game, scoring an unassisted marker nine minutes in to give the X-Men and early 1-0 lead, but that was quickly erased as the Axemen scored three unanswered goals to take the 3-1 lead.

Liam Dutton scored in the 18th minute, then teammate Jonathon Hammond scored two goals within three minutes apart. Vlc scored his first goal in the 41st minute to pull the X-Men to within a goal as they were down 3-2 at half-time. Jamar Dixon assisted on the goal.

Vlc’s second goal came unassisted in the 54th minute to tie the game, then novak followed up with the game winner.

The X-Men outshot the Axemen 14-7 and Andrew MacDonald earned the victory in nets for StFX.

The two teams will face a rematch this coming Friday, Sept. 16th when StFX again travels to Wolfville. They will also host the Memorial Seahawks Sunday afternoon, Sept. 18th in their home opener at Oland Stadium. Game time is 3:15 pm.
