X-Men Fall Short in a Nail Biter Against CBU

Saturday the CIS No. 1 ranked X-Men soccer fell short 2-1 in a penalty kick final to CBU in AUS semi-finals in Moncton.

StFX and Cape Breton University battled it out on the field for 80 scoreless minutes sending the game into overtime.

During overtime X-Men were first to get on the scoreboard with a goal by Jamie Tibbo. CBU’s Kule Kambere responded with a goal to tie the game. The overtime was completed and score stayed at 1-1. 

The exciting AUS semifinals came down to penalty kicks where it could be anyone’s game. CBU’s Ian Greedy and StFX’s Ryan Casey were the first to take the penalty kicks both getting a goal past the net minders. Kambere shot next for CBU and it was a miss. Jamar Dixon for the X-Men fired one in. Shayne Hollis for CBU and Michael Marousek of StFX both scored. CBU’s Donie Curtin gets one past MacEachern. Paul Oppenhein for StFX with a miss.  Cape Breton’s Silvano Rajkovic and Andrew Rigby both get one between the pipes. X-Men’s A.J Gray and Steven Lumley respond with a goal a piece. Greg Whitling of CBU and X’s Kareem Henry each with a miss. Mirza Mehic and Miroslav Novak both get a goal for their teams to keep the tie going. Jamie Tibbo for StFX had a miss and Yianni Harbis for CBU with the game winning goal.

Final score 2 – 1 in CBU’s favor. Total shots on net, excluding penalty kicks, were 14-11 for CBU. Andrew Murphy was given the win for CBU and Evan MacEachern was tagged with the loss.
