X-Men pick up another weekend win
The X-Men hockey team picked up their second win of the weekend, taking home a 2-1 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers Saturday night in Halifax. StFX was coming off a 3-2 win last night over Acadia.

Second year X-Men defenseman Gabe O’Connor opened the scoring 2:38 into the first period. Brennen Wray and Jason Bast assisted, as the goal was the only one scored in the opening period.

Ted Stephens increased the StFX lead with 47 seconds left in the second period. Murdock MacLellan picked up the helper.

The Tigers outshot the X-Men 14-3 in the second frame.

Pierre-Alex Vandall closed the X lead with a third period goal at 14:58 as Benjamin Breault ad Pascal Amyot assisted.
The X-Men kept the home team Tigers off the board for the remaining five minutes to hang on for the 2-1 win. Drew Owsley picked up his eighth win of the season with 34 saves in the StFX net. He also took home Subway player of the game honors.

The Tigers outshot the X-Men by a 35-21 margin.

With the win, the X-Men improve to 15-10-2 on the season and have one game remaining on the AUS regular season schedule. They will travel to Halifax on Friday, Feb. 8th to play the second place Saint Mary’s Huskies (18-7-2). The Huskies have 38 points and clinched a first round bye in the AUS playoffs with a 3-0 shutout over Acadia (16-9-2, 34 points).

With 32 points, the X-Men currently sit in fourth place. All eight AUS teams will be in action next weekend when the final standings will be sorted out and first round quarter-final action will be decided. Aside from UNB and Saint Mary’s clinching the first round byes, Acadia, StFX, UPEI, and Moncton have secured the other four playoff berths.
