Antigonish native Paul MacLean named head coach of Senators

The StFX Department of Athletics and Recreation wishes to extend a sincere congratulations to Antigonish, NS native Paul MacLean who was recently named head coach of the Ottawa Senators.

After spending the past six seasons as an assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings, the Ottawa Senators introduced MacLean as their new head coach on June 14th, signing him to a three-year deal.

MacLean also had assistant coaching stints in Phoenix and Anaheim and was a head coach in the minors. A former NHL player himself, MacLean spent 11 seasons with the St. Louis Blues, Winnipeg Jets and Detroit Red Wings, tallying 324 career goals and 673 points in 719 regular season games. 

As an assistant coach in Detroit, he was a part of the Red Wings organization that that won five division titles and made two Stanley Cup final appearances, including their Stanley Cup victory in 2008.

MacLean grew up in Antigonish, NS and still resides in the university town every summer. StFX Athletics coaches, staff, alumni and fans wish him the best of luck in his new professional hockey coaching endeavor with the Senators.
