Male Athlete of the Week – Phil Mangan X-Men Hockey

X-Men Hockey player Phil Mangan was named the StFX Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 14, 2011. Mangan is a third year Bachelor of Arts in Human Kinetics student from Gananogue, ON. Phil scored two overtime goals and had one assist in the last three playoff games. Mangan scored X-Men’s overtime series winning goal against Saint Mary’s Huskies to defeat them 3-2 and move onto the final series against UNB. Phil had 1 assist in Friday’s 3-2 overtime loss to UNB and had the overtime game winning goal in Saturday’s 2-1 win over UNB to tie the series at 1-1.    

Female Athlete of the Week – Co-winners: Suzanne Fenerty X-Women Hockey & Ashley Stephen X-Women Basketball

Suzanne Fenerty

X-Women Hockey player Suzanne Fenerty was named Co-Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 14, 2011. Fenerty is a forth year Bachelor of Business Administration student from Cole Harbour, NS. The X-Women’s Captain led her team to a silver medal at the 2011 CIS Women’s Hockey Championship. This is the first time that StFX has won a CIS medal in women’s hockey. Suzanne had a total of 2 goals and 2 assists in the 3 games at Nationals. Fenerty scored X-Women’s first goal in their 4-3 quarter-final victory over Laurier, had 2 assists in their 4-3 semi-final win over Manitoba and StFX’s first goal in the Championship Game against McGill where they were defeated 5-3 and captured a silver medal. Suzanne was also named a Tournament All-Star.

Ashley Stephen

X-Women Basketball player Ashley Stephen was named Co-Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 14, 2011. Stephen is a fifth year Non Degree student from Scarborough, ON. The X-Women’s Captain led her team to a CIS Berth by winning the Central Regional Tournament this past weekend in Ottawa, ON. Ashley had 20 points and 13 rebounds in the X-Women’s 82-73 semi-final victory over Alberta Panda’s and had 15 points and 9 rebounds in the 64-59 Championship Game win over Carleton Ravens. Ashley was named the StFX player of the game in both the semi-final and championship game.
