X-Men open AUS semi-finals series against UNB

The X-Men hockey team is set to take on the CIS ranked No. 1 UNB Varsity Reds in the upcoming AUS best 3-of-5 semi-final series. Game 1 opens Thursday night at the Fredericton Aitken Centre.

“We are looking forward to the upcoming AUS semi-final series and the challenge of a very tough opponent in top ranked UNB,” comments X-Men head coach Brad Peddle.
 
“Each game we have played this year has been intense, hard fought and we expect this series to be no different. There has been a very strong rivalry between both programs for a number of years and this AUS semi-final series will certainly continue that moving forward. Our players are very excited to get going and it will be a great challenge for our program”

StFX knocked off UPEI in consecutive games and closed out their AUS quarterfinal series 2-0. They took Game 1 by a 3-2 score in UPEI, followed up by a 3-2 double overtime win at home.

The Varsity Reds advanced to the semi-finals by virtue of a first round bye as they finished in first place atop the AUS conference with a 27-1-0 record. Their only loss of the season came at the hands of the X-Men two weeks ago on Feb. 12th as the X-Men earned a 4-3 win on the road in Fredericton and spoiled the V-Reds quest for a perfect season.

The X-Men enter the semi-finals as the fifth seed as they closed out the regular season with an 11-12-5 record. Second place Acadia (19-6-3) will meet third place Saint Mary’s (16-8-4) in the other semi-final series.

As UNB hold home ice advantage in the best of five series, Games 1 and 2 will take place in Fredericton at the Aitken Centre. Game 1 is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 25th at 7:00 pm, followed by Game 2 on Friday, Feb. 26th, also at 7:00 pm.

Game 3 will be back in Antigonish on Tuesday, March 2nd as the puck drops at 7:00 pm at the StFX Charles V. Keating Centre. Game 4, if necessary, will be played Wednesday, March 3rd in Antigonish at 7:00, followed by Game 5 (if necessary) back in Fredericton on Saturday, March 6th.
