X-Men to face Acadia in AUS quarterfinals

The StFX X-Men will face the Acadia Axemen in AUS quarterfinal playoff action beginning Wednesday night at the StFX Keating Centre. The X-Men clinched fourth place overall despite a 6-0 loss at the hands of the Axemen at Wolfville this past weekend in their final regular season game.

Kristofer Westblom earning the shutout victory for the Axemen, facing only 14 StFX shots in the game, while goals came from the sticks of Scott Giles, Tyler Whitehead, David Lomas, Jonathan Laberge, Blair Jarrett and Ryan Graham. The Axemen led 1-0 after the first period of play and 3-0 after two en route to the win. Joey Perricone took the loss in nets for the X-Men.

With a 15-11-2 regular season record, the X-Men earned fourth place with 32 points, one more then fifth place Acadia. The teams will square off for Game 1 on Wednesday night, Feb. 18 at 7pm at the StFX Keating Centre, with Game 2 scheduled for Acadia on Friday night. Game 3, if necessary, will be played back at StFX on Sunday night.

The teams have met four times in regular season competition this year with Acadia holding a 4-0 edge in the series. In four exhibition games between X and Acadia each team has won two games in their own arena. Fans are in for some close playoff hockey action, with the winner advancing through to the semi-finals to meet either first place UNB (21-4-3) or second place Saint Mary’s (20-7-1). Moncton (16-8-4) and UPEI (13-12-3) are playing in the other quarterfinal series.
