X-Men goalie recieves CIS Athlete of the Week honors

Goaltenders Tessier, Battochio honoured

OTTAWA (CIS) – Hockey goaltenders Jamie Tessier of Windsor and Danny Battochio of St. Francis Xavier are the Canadian University Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending January 12, 2009.

Tessier, a third-year communications & arts student from Copper Cliff, Ont., stopped 96 of 98 pucks fired her way over the weekend, including a 68-save effort against No. 3-ranked Wilfrid Laurier (17-0), as the Lancers (7-9-1) dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to the Golden Hawks and edged Waterloo (6-9-1), 2-1. The 20-year-old netminder was sensational against undefeated Laurier on Saturday, blocking 19 shots in the first period, 24 in the second and 22 in the third before the Hawks finally got one past her on their fourth shot in OT. Tessier, who has a 2.32 goals against average and a .929 save percentage this season, added 28 saves against Waterloo on Sunday to help the Lancers build a two-point lead over the Warriors in the OUA standings.

Memorial basketball player Alexandria Forsey, Laval swimmer Paméla Filiatrault-Veilleux and Regina basketball player Chelsea Cassano were also nominated for the women’s award.

Battochio, a third-year arts student from Lively, Ont., allowed only three goals in three starts last week, including back-to-back shutouts and a pair of wins over Top-10 teams, as the X-Men (10-5-2) racked up three victories to make their way into the national rankings for the first time this season, at No. 9. The 22-year-old goalie, who leads the Atlantic conference in games (17) and minutes (985:58) played, shutouts (2), saves (492) and save percentage (.913), stopped 33 shots last Wednesday - including all 11 pucks fired at him in the third period - in a 4-3 win over No. 7-ranked Saint Mary’s (12-6). He added 22 saves on Friday in a 4-0 shutout over Moncton (9-5-2) – ranked No. 7 at the time of the contest -, and was perfect on 23 shots Saturday in a 10-0 blanking of St. Thomas (2-11-3).
