Battochio named AUS Male Athlete of the Week

Danny Battochio of the #9-ranked StFX X-Men hockey team is the Atlantic University Sport Subway Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 11th, 2009. Danny, a third year Arts student from Lively, ON earned three wins between the pipes this week, including two victories over CIS Top-10 ranked schools and two shutouts. In the X-Men’s 4-3 win over the #8-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies last Wednesday, Battochio turned aside 33-of-36 shots. Danny then went on to not allow a goal in a pair of weekend games, with 22 saves in a 4-0 shutout over the #7-ranked Moncton Aigles Bleus on Friday and another 23 saves in a 10-0 shutout win over the St. Thomas Tommies Saturday evening. The two shutouts were the first of his CIS career and also marked the first shutout for the X-Men program in a regular season game since the 2005-06 season. Battochio, who has posted 10 wins and a 2.86 goals against average this season, currently leads the Atlantic conference in games and minutes played, shutouts (2), saves (492) and save percentage (.913). The X-Men have won their past six regular season games and sit in third place with 22 points, two points out of first place.
