X-Men shut out nationally ranked Aigles Bleus

Led by goaltender and Player of the Game Danny Battochio, the X-Men shut out the nationally ranked #7 Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleus en route to a 4-0 win in front of a crowd of over 1000 at home Friday night in Antigonish.

Battochio made 22 saves to secure the win and his first shutout victory of the season. The win marked the second one this week over a CIS top ten team as the X-Men defeated the #8 ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies 4-3 on Wednesday, also on home ice.

X-Men forward Chris Hulit opened the scoring in the game with a power play goal six minutes into the first period. Brett Robertson and Phil Mangan assisted on the play.

At the 15:20 mark of the opening frame, Kevin Undershute knocked in the X-Men’s second goal of the game, assisted by Brett Morrison.

Defenseman Sam Roberts scored a second period power play goal to increase the X-Men lead to 3-0 after two periods of play. Mangan had his second assist of the game on the goal, along with Hulit.

Brett Robertson had a scoring opportunity for X just 48 seconds into the third period when he was taken down by Aigles Blues Billy Bezeau on a breakaway attempt. Bezeau was called for hooking and Robertson was awarded a penalty shot, which he then dinged off the side post.

StFX teammate Matthew Bragg scored less then a minute after the penalty shot attempt, making a nice move in front of the net to beat Aigles Blues netminder Kevin Lachance up high. Bryce Swan and Sean Flinn were credited with the assists. Lachance was pulled from the game at that point for back-up goaltender Pierre-Alexandre Marion.

\r\n

Battochio held the Aigles Bleus scoreless for the remainder of the final period to hang onto the win. The X-Men outshot the Aigles Blues by a 29-22 margin.

Forward Remi Gautreau was named Player of the Game for the Universite de Moncton while Battochio received the honors for StFX.

Moncton (9-4-2) now travels to Halifax to face the Saint Mary’s Huskies (11-6-0) Saturday night, while the X-Men (9-5-2) will host the St. Thomas Tommies (2-10-3) at 7:00 pm at the StFX Keating Centre.
