X-Men knock off 1st place Moncton

The hockey X-Men had a big weekend at home, earning two wins including a 3-2 overtime victory over the first place and CIS number 2 ranked Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleus. They also defeated the St. Thomas Tommies by a 4-1 margin.

The Tommies were in town Friday night but were no match for the X-Men powerplay as the blue and white scored 3 of their 4 goals with the man advantage en route to the 4-1 win. Chris Hulit scored the first goal of the game on the power play, 2 minutes into the second period and teammate Brett Liscomb scored what would be the game winner at 8:07 also in the second period and on the power play.

Captain Will Colbert added an even strength goal before the second period was up to establish a 3-0 lead and Jeff Caron rounded out the scoring for X in the third period. Corey Banfield scored the lone Tommies goal. Brett Morrison had two assists for the X-Men.

Danny Battochio earned the win in nets for the X-Men with 22 saves while Matt Davis took the loss for the Tommies, facing 49 StFX shots.

On Saturday night in Antigonish the X-Men handed the nationally ranked #2 and AUS first place Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleus a 3-2 defeat in overtime as Brett Liscomb scored his second game winner in as many nights with less then 3 minutes left in the overtime period.

The X-Men had jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period of play with goals from Sean Flinn and Bryce Swan. Ian Mathieu-Girard scored a power play for Moncton with less then a minute left in the second period.

\r\n

The Aigles Bleus pulled their goalkeeper late in the third and final frame and it paid off as Dean Ouellet scored the tying goal with only 13 seconds left in the game. Moncton then came out firing in the overtime period and had 6 shots until Brett Liscomb beat Pierre-Alexandre Marion with a high shot from a nice pass by Brett Robertson.

Marion took the loss in nets, facing 30 shots while Danny Battochio earned the win for StFX with 23 saves.

\r\n

The X-Men improve their record to 6-5-2 and currently sit in 6th place in the AUS standings. They will play the second place Saint Mary’s Huskies (9-4-0) Saturday night at home at the Keating Centre at 7:00 pm in their final regular season game prior to the holiday break.
