Tigers hang on for 76-71 win over X-Men in Shoveller tournament consolation final

Halifax, NS - Jarred Reid had a game-high 25 points as the Dalhousie Tigers held on for a close 76-71 win over the StFX X-Men in the consolation final of the Rod and Joan Memorial tournament Saturday afternoon on New Year's Eve.

The Tigers got out to an early 19-13 lead in the first quarter and carried a six-point lead into half time at 37-31. The X-Men came to life in the second half of the game, but the Tigers secured the win late in the fourth, keeping StFX off the scoreboard.

Tournament all-star Kashrell Lawrence had 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals in the game for Dalhousie, with Ritchie Kanza Mata chipping in 10 points and four assists.

Cameron Walker was hot for the X-Men with 20 points and seven rebounds, while tournament all-star Kevin Bercy had 12 points and seven rebounds.

The U Sports No. 4 ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees went 3-0 in tournament play to claim the crown with a 78-69 victory over Saint Mary's. Jean Emmanuel Pierre-Charles (Ottawa), Theon Reefer (SMU) and Tyler Scott (UPEI) rounded out the all-star team in the eight-team tournament.  

The Tigers return to action in 2017 when they head to UPEI on Saturday, January 7, while StFX will resume AUS regular season action when they host the Acadia Axemen on Friday, January 6th at 8:00 pm at the StFX Oland Centre.
