Basketball X-Men battle visiting Huskies
In a game of scoring spurts, the StFX X-Men defeated the Saint Mary’s Huskies 77-69 in AUS basketball action Saturday night at Oland Centre.

After falling behind 62-52 with 8:52 remaining in the fourth quarter, the blue and white ended the game on a 25-7 run to earn the victory.

All-Canadian Terry Thomas led four X-Men in double figures with 25 points, while adding six rebounds, two assists, two steals and one blocked shot.

Point guard Tyrell Vernon contributed 14 points, five rebounds and five assists, while forward Jeremy Dunn collected 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists, one steal and one blocked shot. Off the bench, Rodrigo Madera scored 10, along with collecting five rebounds and two blocked shots.

For the Huskies, Riley Halpin led three players in double digits with 21 points, with Jordan Lee and Harry Ezeniebe chipping in 20 and 17, respectively. Ezeniebe completed the double-double with 18 rebounds.

After the X-Men led 47-31 at halftime, the Huskies opened the third quarter with a 20-0 run in the first 6:30 to take a 51-47 advantage. Thomas stopped the Huskies’ explosion with a basket at 3:01, followed by a Dunn three-pointer, which gave the X-Men a 52-51 lead.

The Huskies jumped back in front 54-52 by the end of the third quarter on a three-point shot by Lee with 1:30 remaining.

In the third quarter, the X-Men shot 11.8 per cent (2-for-17), while the Huskies connected on 40.9 per cent (9-for-22), while the visitors scored a 19-6 rebounding advantage, including six to one on the offensive end.

The Huskies scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to take a 62-52 lead over the X-Men, before Vernon made a lay-up off a pass from Thomas to cut the blue-and-white disadvantage to eight. That basket was part of a 15-0 run for the X-Men, who took a 67-62 lead with 5:25 remaining in regulation. In that spurt, Vernon scored seven points, including one three-pointer.

In the fourth quarter, the blue and white out-rebounded the Huskies 11-9, including five on the offensive glass.
 
With the win, the X-Men improve to 4-2, while the Huskies drop to 2-4.

The X-Men will wrap up AUS regular season play prior to the Christmas break with a road game Wednesday, Nov. 28 versus the CIS #2 ranked Acadia Axemen. Game time is 8 p.m. in Wolfville.
