X-Men handle V-Reds on the basketball court

The X-Men basketball team picked up a much needed victory Saturday night as they defeated the UNB Varsity Reds 91-75 in Fredericton. The win was worth four points in the AUS standings.

StFX led the V-Reds in every quarter, starting off the game with a 25-23 advantage after the first quarter of play. They increased that lead to 48-40 at halftime, then went on to outscore the Varsity Reds 43-35 in the second half.

The X-Men came with a balanced attack as six players hit the double scoring figures, including Jeremy Dunn who turned in an 18 point, 11 rebound performance. The veteran forward also had 5 assists, 1 block and 3 steals for the blue and white who shot 45.8% from field goal range.

Rodrigo Madera came off the bench to score 16 points for StFX, while Jordan Clarke scored 15. Player of the Game Tyrell Vernon scored 14 points and dished 4 assists, Will Donkoh scored 11 points and had 6 assists, while Shane Coupland contributed 10 points and 9 rebounds.

The X-Men were 26.3% in three-point shooting and 76.9% from the free throw line.

The home Varsity Reds were 41.7% in field goals, 37.5% in three point shooting and 54.5% from the charity stripe. William McFee led the V-Reds in scoring with 18 points, while Daniel Quirion scored 13. Michael Fozzolari chipped in 11 points and Matthew Daley scored 10.

With the win, the X-Men now sit with a 5-5 record in fourth place in the AUS standings with 14 points. UNB falls to 3-6 in a tie for fifth place. Next on the schedule for the blue and white is a single game this coming weekend as the X-Men ravel to Halifax to face the fifth place Saint Mary’s Huskies (2-7) on Sunday, January 20th. Tip-off is 4:00 pm at the Homburg Center.
