CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#20)
New national leaders in men’s hockey, women’s track & field

OTTAWA (CIS) – For the second straight week, new teams top the CIS national rankings in men’s hockey and women’s track and field.

In men’s hockey, the reigning CIS champion UNB Varsity Reds, who topped the first 10 polls of the campaign, move back to No. 1 after spending the last three weeks behind McGill (two weeks) and Western (one week).

In women’s track and field, the Guelph Gryphons move back to the top after dropping behind Windsor and Saskatchewan last Tuesday.

In other CIS sports, Regina (women’s basketball), Carleton (men’s basketball), Wilfrid Laurier (women’s hockey), UBC (women’s swimming), Toronto (men’s swimming), Windsor (men’s track and field), UBC (women’s volleyball), Trinity Western (men’s volleyball), Brock (women’s wrestling) and Concordia (men’s wrestling) all maintain their No. 1 status.

In women’s basketball, top-ranked Regina (19-0) is one win away from the first unblemished regular season in program history following a weekend sweep at Lethbridge, 99-85 and 78-63. The Cougars should get all they can handle in their conference finale however as they visit No. 3 Saskatchewan (15-4) on Saturday.

In men’s hoops, Carleton easily improved to 20-0 over the weekend thanks to a 115-43 domination of RMC and an 80-47 victory over Queen’s. The reigning CIS champions wrap up their OUA schedule with home games against Toronto (9-11) on Friday and Ryerson (12-8) on Saturday. The Ravens finished 22-0 a year ago en route to their seventh CIS title in nine seasons.

In women’s hockey, No. 1 Laurier (25-0-1) beat Brock 3-1 and seventh-ranked Guelph 5-0 to end the regular season as the only team in the country without a loss in regulation. The Golden Hawks host Brock (12-13-1) on Wednesday in Game 1 of a best-of-three OUA quarter-final series.

In men’s hockey, UNB return to No. 1 after closing out conference play with three wins in four days, including 4-1 victories over nationally ranked Moncton and UPEI. The V-Reds, who were ranked second behind Western a week ago, finished first in the Atlantic conference standings and enjoy a bye in the first round of the AUS playoffs.

In women’s volleyball, UBC (18-2) closed out conference play with a weekend split against No. 3 Trinity Western, losing a five-setter last Friday before rebounding the following night with a 3-0 win. The reigning four-time CIS champion Thunderbirds, who had already secured first place in Canada West before the two-game set, have a bye in the first round of the payoffs.

In men’s volleyball, Trinity Western (19-1) put the finishing touch to an exceptional regular schedule with back-to-back straight-set wins against eighth-ranked UBC. The defending national champion Spartans will enjoy a rest this weekend as the Canada West playoffs get under way with the quarter-final round.
