X-Men improve to 7-0 on season

The CIS ranked No. 3 X-Men basketball team extended their AUS regular season unbeaten steak to 7 games with two weekend wins at Memorial University.

The games, regularly scheduled for Saturday night and Sunday afternoon were bumped up a day due to flight delays on the part of the X teams arriving in Newfoundland. Nonetheless, the teams took to the court Sunday night and Monday and the X-Men came home with 97-67 and 78-57 victories over the Seahawks.

\r\n

Sunday night the Seahawks led in the game early on, outscoring the X-Men 22-17 in the first quarter. StFX turned around to own a slim 35-34 lead at halftime then opened up their scoring attack in the second half, outscoring the hometown Seahawks 62-33 en route to the win.

Reigning AUS Player of the Year Christian T-Bear Upshaw led the StFX attack with 21 points and also added 5 assists and 3 steals. Freshman Charlie Spurr scored 17 points and Will Silver added 14 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds. Alberto Rodriguez had a double-double game for the X-Men, tallying 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

Responding for the Seahawks was Jason Shephard with 16 points and 7 rebounds, while teammates Justin Grainger and Steve Earles added 16 and 15 points, respectively.

On Monday afternoon, The X-Men outscored the Seahawks 38-31 and held on in the second half for the 78-57 win. The X-Men have won all league games to date by double digit margins.

\r\n

In Monday’s win, four X-Men were in the double scoring figures, including Jeremy Dunn with 13 points and Upshaw and Spurr who each scored 12. Upshaw also added 9 assists and 6 rebounds. Cornerbrook, NF native Chad Warren played a strong game off the bench, scoring 11 points and adding 9 rebounds and 5 assists.

Robbie Habib scored 16 points for Memorial and Steve Earles had 13 points and 8 rebounds.

With the 7-0 record, the X-Men lead the AUS conference with 18 points, two ahead of second place Cape Breton. Next on the schedule, the X-Men will host the fifth place Acadia Axemen (4-4) Friday at 8:00 pm at the StFX Oland centre, followed by a Sunday afternoon road trip to Dalhousie (5-3).
