X-Women extend unbeaten streak to three matches

The StFX X-Women are unbeaten in three matches after playing to a 1-1 tie with the visiting Cape Breton University Capers Sunday afternoon at Oland Stadium in Antigonish.

Sarah Cannell opened the scoring for the blue and white in the 45th minute on a penalty kick. The third-year centre midfielder deposited a high shot behind Capers’ keeper Tiffany O’Donnell. The opportunity came after Maura Woodman was hauled down in the penalty area by O’Donnell after she broke in behind the Capers’ defenders.

In the second half of a back-and-forth match-up, which included spurts of heavy rain and wind, the Capers evened the score on a free kick by Kaelyn Burke in the 60th minute.

Second-year defender Brianna Cuzzolino was the player of the game for the X-Women, with defender Allison Bell-Davies taking the honour for the Capers.

With the tie, the X-Women improve their record to 1-4-2, while the Capers have a 5-0-2 mark. The blue and white started the AUS regular season 0-4.

The X-Women will have the Thanksgiving weekend off, then return to action Saturday, October 13, when they host the Saint Mary’s Huskies. Game time is 1 p.m. at Oland Stadium.
