Soccer X-Women earn first regular season win

Led by a pair of second-half goals from Rachel Dragan, the StFX X-Women earned a 2-0 win over the visiting UNB Varsity Reds in AUS soccer Friday evening at Oland Stadium in Antigonish.

The fourth-year midfielder from Orleans, Ont. opened the scoring in the 49th minute, when she sailed a left-footed shot over the head of Varsity Reds’ goalkeeper Kelsie Hope.

Dragan, the Subway player of the game, completed the play after a great cross-field pass from second-year striker Maura Woodman. That combination came together again in the 82nd minute, with Dragan getting her foot on the ball off a goal-mouth scramble off a Woodman corner kick.

Maris Miller made five saves to record the shutout.

It was the first win of the AUS regular season for the X-Women, who improve to 1-4-1. The Varsity Reds drop to 1-2-3.

The blue and white will return to action Sunday when they host the Cape Breton University Capers. Game time is 4 p.m. at Oland Stadium.
