X-Women soccer drop two weekend games

The X-Women soccer team dropped two games this weekend and fall to 4-5-2 on the season after a 3-1 loss to Dalhousie Friday night and a 2-0 loss to Cape Breton on Sunday afternoon.

StFX was outshot 11-2 by the first place Dalhousie Tigers Friday evening in Halifax as the Tigers got out to a 2-0 half-time lead. Anna McKilligan scored an unassisted goal 11 minutes in, while teammate Kate MacDonald scored in the 25th minute off a penalty kick.

Freshman Jordan Brass got the X-Women on the board in the 66th minute to pull the X-Women to within a goal, but the Tigers quickly responded just three minutes later with a goal of their own by Beth O’Reilly to seal the 3-1 win. Taryn McKenna earned the win in nets for the Tigers while StFX’s Anna Thompson took the loss.

On Sunday afternoon, the X-Women were unable to solve Cape Breton goalkeeper Tiffany O’Donnell as the Capers earned a 2-0 shutout over the X-Women at Oland Stadium.

Caitlin Shaw opened up the scoring in the game with an unassisted goal in the 28th minute. Their goal came in early in the second half in the 58th minute off a StFX own goal. Cape Breton outshot the X-Women 9-4 as the home team was unable to find the back of the net. Maris Miller took the loss for StFX.

With 11 points and a 5-4-2 record, the X-Women currently sit in a tie for fourth place in the AUS conference along side UNB (4-6-2). UPEI (9-0-3) with 30 points, has a slim one point lead over Dalhousie (9-0-2) for first place, while Cape Breton sits in third spot (6-3-2) with 20 points.

StFX has two games remaining on the AUS regular season as teams will sort out playoff positions in the coming week. The X-Women play host to the eighth place Acadia Axewomen (2-4-5) Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm at Oland Stadium, before wrapping up the season in Halifax Sunday afternoon against the sixth place Saint Mary’s Huskies (3-4-4). The AUS championship is slated for Nov. 5-7 at Acadia University.
