StFX boasts strong contingent at national rugby 7s tournament
The StFX X-Women sent two current players and one former player to the USA Rugby Sevens tournament in Las Vegas, NV on the weekend of February 10th-12th, 2012.  Amanda Thornborough, Magali Harvey and Ghislaine Landry were the three representatives from StFX taking part in the tournament. Thornborough and Harvey both are still currently on the X-Women team while Landry has since graduated and has blossomed as one of the top women’s rugby sevens players in the world.

Canada sent two teams to the tournament, with Thornborough and Harvey on the Maple Leafs team while Landry was on the Canada team. Thornborough and Harvey’s Maple Leafs ended up falling short to the United States in the semi-final, only for Landry’s Canadian team to beat the host Americans in the championship and take the crown as the best women’s rugby sevens team.

Harvey and Landry were recently selected as an elite group of 20 players in Canada that will compete in another tournament March 23-25th in Hong Kong. Landry was named the MVP of the sevens tournament in Las Vegas, signifying her elite status in the rugby world.  Overall X-Women head coach Mike Cavanaugh has high praise for the three players that he helped groom into some of Canada’s best women’s rugby players.

“All three of these young women are just tremendous rugby players and tremendous people,” commented Cavanagh. “Amanda is a very versatile and powerful player who can score from anywhere.  Magali is such a raw talent, she is new to the sport and every time she plays she gets better and better, the potential for Magali is through the roof. Lastly, Ghislaine is an amazing talent, she makes everyone around her better and her speed and vision are second to none in this country.”

“I could definitely see all three of these players representing Canada at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.”
