X-Women rugby clinch first place

The CIS No. 3 ranked X-Women rugby team clinched first place in the AUS conference with a 67-3 win over the Acadia Axewomen in Wolfville Friday night in their final regular season game.

The X-Women improved to a perfect 6-0 record on the season and earned a bye into the AUS championship game, which they will host Oct. 31st at StFX Oland Stadium.

StFX held a 36-0 lead at half-time and added to that cushion in the second half for the 67-0 victory. AUS league leading scorer Magali Harvey led the X-Women offense with 26 points in the game as she scored 4 trys and added 3 conversions.

Courtnay Malcolm had 16 points with 2 tries and 3 conversions, while Amanda Bedard and Asya Bartley each scored a pair of tries for the 12-time defending AUS champions. Olivia Demerchant rounded out the scoring for the X-Women with a single try.

Erin Beazley replied for the Axewomen with a penalty goal for their lone points and was Acadia’s Player of the Game, while Harvey earned Player of the Game honors for StFX.

With the win, the X-Women will enjoy a weekend off and wait for their championship game opponent as Acadia will battle it out for second place against either Saint Mary’s or UPEI. The AUS final is scheduled for Sunday, October 31st at StFX (time to be determined) and will be broadcast live on www.ssncanada.ca. The AUS champion will advance to the CIS national championship being hosted by Trent University in Peterborough, ON from Nov. 4-7, 2010.
