BLACKBERRY - CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#3)
Reigning national champions remain at No. 1

OTTAWA (CIS) – Reigning national champion Trinity Western, Laval and Lethbridge hold on to the No. 1 positions in this week’s CIS soccer and rugby rankings.

In women’s soccer, the two-time defending champion Trinity Western Spartans (2-0-0) kicked off the Canada West schedule last weekend with a pair of road wins, blanking Lethbridge 2-0 on Saturday before edging Calgary 2-1 on Sunday thanks to a 65th minute goal by all-Canadian striker Nikki Wright.

Rounding out the third national coaches poll of the fall are No. 2 Montreal (2-0-0), No. 3 Queen’s (4-0-0), No. 4 UBC (2-0-0), No. 5 McGill (2-0-0), No. 6 Ottawa (1-0-1), No. 7 Wilfrid Laurier (3-0-0), No. 8 Alberta (2-0-0), No. 9 Laval (2-0-0) and No. 10 UPEI (1-0-1).

Laurier, Alberta and Laval were all unranked a week ago.

In men’s soccer, the Laval Rouge et Or (2-0-0), who captured their first-ever CIS title in 2009, are also off to an unblemished start in conference play thanks to a 7-0 whitewash of UQTR and a 2-1 win over UQAM. A penalty goal in the final seconds of Sunday’s contest against UQAM robbed Laval of a second straight shutout.

The new Top 10 is completed by No. 2 Toronto (3-0-1), No. 3 McGill (1-0-0), No. 4 UBC (1-0-0), No. 5 Western Ontario (4-0-0), No. 6 York (2-1-0), No. 7 Trinity Western (0-1-0), No. 8 Calgary (2-0-0), No. 9 Saint Mary’s (2-0-0) and No. 10 Wilfrid Laurier (3-0-0).

Western, Calgary, Saint Mary’s and Laurier were unranked last Tuesday.

In women’s rugby, the three-time defending champion Lethbridge Pronghorns remain atop the second coaches poll of the season. The ‘Horns still have to wait until Sept. 24 to open their title defence at Victoria.

Conference play started over the weekend in the three other CIS conferences with No. 2 Guelph, No. 3 StFX and No. 4 Concordia – all reigning league champions – all getting off to 1-0 starts.

Rounding out the new Top 10 are No. 5 Laval (1-0), No. 6 Alberta (0-0), No. 7 Western (1-0), No. 8 McMaster (1-0), No. 9 UBC (0-0) and No. 10 Queen’s (1-0).
