Stingers named top seed for 2024 women's hockey championship

RICHMOND HILL, Ont. (U SPORTS) — The Concordia Stingers, who posted a 25-0 regular season record and won their third straight RSEQ championship, are the top seed heading into the 2024 GFL U SPORTS Women's Hockey Championship, presented by Connect Energy. U SPORTS announced the seeding on Sunday for the 2024 championship, which runs from Thursday to Sunday at Merlis Belsher Place on the campus of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon.

The complete field, in seeding order, is as follows:

1. Concordia Stingers (RSEQ champions, 25-0 regular season, 4-2 playoffs)
2. UBC Thunderbirds (CW champions, 24-4, 4-2)
3. UNB Reds (AUS champions: 21-7, 5-1)
4. Waterloo Warriors (OUA champions, 18-10, 5-1)
5. STFX X-Women (AUS finalists, 21-7, 3-4)
6. Toronto Varsity Blues (OUA finalists, 19-9, 4-3)
7. Montréal Carabins (RSEQ finalists, 13-12, 3-3)
8. Saskatchewan Huskies (hosts, 19-9, 1-2)

In women's hockey, the four conference champions are seeded in the top four based on their final national ranking. The four other participants are placed so that each side of the draw includes one team from each conference.

The quarterfinals will be played on Thursday and Friday, as follows: (all times Mountain)

• Thursday, 1 p.m.: No. 5 STFX vs. No. 4 Waterloo
• Thursday, 7 p.m.: No. 1 Concordia at No. 8 Saskatchewan
• Friday, 1 p.m.: No. 7 Montréal vs. No. 2 UBC
• Friday, 7 p.m.: No. 6 Toronto vs. No. 3 UNB

Saturday's action starts with two consolation games at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., with the semifinals set for 4 and 7 p.m. On Sunday, the fifth-place game will get underway at 11 a.m., with the bronze-medal game following at 3 p.m. and the championship at 6 p.m.

All 11 games from the event will be broadcast live on CBC Sports digital platforms in English. In French, the games will be carried on Radio Canada's digital platforms (French), with Sunday's gold medal game being aired on TVA Sports.
