Hoop X-Women compete in Laval tourney

The STFX X-Women played a trio of exhibition games at the Laval Rouge et Or Tournament in Quebec City at PEPS. The X-Women had a 0-3 record, dropping games to Laval, Windsor and Guelph.

They played the host Laval squad Thursday afternoon and were defeated by a 62-46 margin. The No. 6 nationally ranked Rouge et Or currently have a 6-0 record in league play atop the RSEQ conference. Laval built up a 25-18 lead at halftime. They then outscored the X-Women 18-11 in the third quarter and a close 19-17 in the fourth quarter.

Ekaterina Karchevskaya was the top scorer for the X-Women with 15 points in the game. Shannon Neita and Avery Walker each added six points apiece.

On Friday afternoon the X-Women tipped off against the Windsor Lancers, who are in fourth place in the OUA West conference with a 5-3 record. Windsor got the better of the X-Women, winning 73-60.

The Lancers outscored the X-Women 29-18 in the first quarter and went up 46-29 at halftime. Karchevskaya scored 13 points in the opening half for the X-Women and Lauren Neeve added seven.

The third quarter saw STFX outpace the Lancers by an 18-13 margin as Windsor was leading 59-47 after three. The X-Women made a run down the stretch in the final quarter but could not overcome the deficit.  

Karchevskaya was the top scorer in the game with 22 points and added six rebounds for X while Neeve finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Krissy Cooper scored nine points and had seven rebounds off the X-Women bench and Neita led the team in rebounds with 13.

BOX SCORE – STFX vs Windsor

The X-Women rounded out the tournament with a 72-56 loss to the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday afternoon. The Gryphons are in second place in the OUA East division with a 6-4 record.

Guelph got out to a 28-16 advantage after the first quarter of play and after a close 13-12 second quarter in the Gryphons favor, they lead 41-28 at halftime. STFX won the third quarter 19-17 as they trailed by 11 points, 58-47 after three, but were unable to cut further into the lead in the final frame and Guelph took the win.

Karchevskaya was again the leading scorer for the X-Women with 12 points in the game. Mali Straker and Elziabeth Kennedy scored 10 and nine points, respectively off the X bench. Neita was the leading rebounder with 10 on the afternoon.

The X-Women currently sit in seventh place in the AUS conference with a 2-6 record. They are back in action on Friday, January 5th when they host the fifth place Memorial Sea-Hawks (5-5) in a 6:00 pm game at Coach K Court at the STFX Saputo Centre. The same two teams will square off again on Saturday evening, also at 6:00 pm.
