STFX wraps up tourney with win over host UBCO

Kelowna, BC – In their final game at the UBCO Fall Classic pre-season tournament, the STFX X-Men defeated the host UBCO Heat 90-73 to wrap up the three-day event with a 2-1 record.

Trinity Western also finished at 2-1, with Ottawa going undefeated at 3-0. Mount Royal was 1-2 over the weekend and the host UBCO squad was winless, 0-4.

Sunday afternoon's match saw the X-Men get out to a 24-10 lead over the Heat after the first quarter of play. Although the Heat outscored X in the second quarter, 23-20, the X-Men were up 44-33 at halftime.

Deon Ejim led the X-Men with 11 first-half points, while Antoine Vernon scored seven. Jonathan Haughton paced the Heat with seven points.

They did not relinquish their lead in the second half, staying ahead 63-48 after three quarters and outlasting UBCO 27-25 in the final quarter on route to the win.

Dondre Reddick was the X-Men leading scorer with 17 points on the afternoon, while Vernon finished with 15. Ejim scored 14 and hauled in 9 rebounds, with Gatluak James scoring 11 and adding 9 rebounds as well.

Leon Schenker was the top scorer for the Heat with 17 points.

The X-Men will be back in exhibition action on Wednesday night, October 18th at the STFX Saputo Centre when they host the Cape Breton Capers in their final exhibition game of the pre-season.
