The StFX X-Men will be represented by four athletes at this year’s East West Bowl, a showcase for 2014 CFL draft-eligible players. The game is slated for May 11th at Western University in London, Ont.
“The East West Bowl is a great opportunity for these young men to get their first exposure to the CFL and the CFL coaches,” comments X-Men head coach Gary Waterman. “We have outstanding talent in the CIS and the fact that we are able to get the top young players from each CIS team together in one location makes for an entertaining week.”
Representing StFX University will be wide receivers Jordan Catterall and Devon Bailey, offensive lineman Terry Hart and defensive back Charlton Elliott.
A native of Oakville, Ont., Jordan Catterall wrapped up his third season with the X-Men and is a two-time AUS offensive all-star. The 2010 AUS rookie of the year, Catterall led the team and was third overall in the AUS with 30 receptions for 520 total yards, averaging 65.0 yards/game and 17.3 yards per reception. He scored three touchdowns and also had 12 returns for 303 yards on special teams.
"Jordan Catterall has been one of the top receivers in the AUS since his arrival,” comments Coach Waterman. “He has been the conference rookie of the year and an AUS all-star for the past two years. His is speed and playmaking ability should allow him to compete at a high level at the East West Bowl.”
Devon Bailey also competed his third season with the X-Men. A receiver from Mississauga, Ont. and a 2012 AUS offensive all-star, Bailey second in team receptions and fourth overall in the AUS with 28 on the season for 331 total yards. He averaged 55.2 yards/game and 11.8 yards per reception.
“It has been very exciting watching Devon Bailey improve from year to year,” says Waterman. “He is an explosive receiver and at 6'4" with his speed and leaping ability, he is a difficult cover for most defensive backs and should be a highly rated CFL prospect.”
Six foot, three inch and 295 pound offensive lineman Terry Hart from Barrie, Ont. completed his third season with the X-Men this past fall. According to Coach Waterman, “Terry Hart has been one of our most physical offensive linemen since the first day that he has walked onto our campus.”
“He has developed great leadership qualities and has become one of our team captains. We expect him to represent us well at the East West game.”
Rounding out the X-Men East West Bowl participants is third year defensive back Charlton Elliott from Pickering, Ont. Elliott played all eight games for StFX this past season, accumulating 15 solo and 7 assisted tackles for a total of 18.5 on the year.
“If you are looking for a defensive back with a high football I.Q. who can play multiple positions within the secondary then Charlton Elliot is your guy,” credits head coach Gary Waterman. “He has great range in coverage and is a good special team’s player.”

Rosters announced for 11th annual East West Bowl
OTTAWA (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Wednesday the rosters for the 11th annual East West Bowl, presented by Under Armour, which is set for Saturday, May 11, 2013 at TD Waterhouse Stadium on the campus of Western University in London, Ont.

Western will host the game for the fifth straight year. The contest was previously held at McMaster (2008), Laval (2007, 2006) and Wilfrid Laurier (2005, 2004, 2003). Kickoff for the 2013 edition is scheduled for 1 p.m.
In addition to the game itself, the week-long event includes daily practices, the Under Armour Combine for participating players (May 7), the Free Agent Combine for players eligible to attend 2013 CFL training camps and not participating in the East West Bowl (May 8), a coaches clinic featuring presentations by nine CFL coaches and two CIS mentors (May 10-11), as well as the annual Friday night banquet (May 10).
For the second year in a row, Laval’s Glen Constantin and McMaster’s Stefan Ptaszek will serve as head coach for the East and West teams, respectively.
Constantin will act as sideline boss at the Classic for the third straight year and for the seventh time overall. Last November, he guided his Rouge et Or to the Vanier Cup title for the sixth time in 12 seasons at the helm of the Quebec City powerhouse.
Ptaszek has led his Marauders to back-to-back appearances in the CIS final, including the first Vanier Cup championship in program history in 2011.
The East West Bowl showcases – for the most part - CIS players who will be eligible for the following year’s CFL draft.
The East side is comprised of student-athletes representing schools from the Atlantic and Quebec conferences, as well as Queen’s, Ottawa and Toronto. The West contingent is made up of players from Canada West and the remaining OUA universities.
Seven standouts who will take the field on May 11 – four for the East and three for the West - were named CIS all-Canadians last fall, including Laval centre Pierre Lavertu, McGill offensive tackle Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, Queen’s linebacker Sam Sabourin, Montreal defensive back Antoine Pruneau, Manitoba running back Anthony Coombs, Saskatchewan receiver Kit Hillis and McMaster kicker Tyler Crapigna.
The East roster also features Concordia linebacker Max Caron, who claimed the Presidents’ Trophy in 2011 as the best defensive player in CIS football.
Quarterbacking the East team at TD Waterhouse Stadium will be Queen’s Billy McPhee and Saint Mary’s Ben Rossong, while McMaster’s Marshall Ferguson and Windsor’s Austin Kennedy will be under centre for the West. McPhee and Kennedy both competed in the event a year ago.
EAST WEST BOWL NOTES: A few players are expected to be added to the rosters in the coming weeks... The coaching staffs will also be announced at a later date... The East has won the last three editions, including a 24-16 victory a year ago... The West leads the all-time series 6-4...
