Hubbeard to attend CFL Combine

X-Men linebacker Brett Hubbeard has been selected to attend the 2013 CFL Combine, being held March 22-24 in Toronto. The combine features over 50 of the top football prospects from across the country.

Executives, coaches and scouts from all eight CFL teams interview and evaluate the top Canadian Draft-eligible prospects. Players are subjected to a variety of exercises and drills to test their physical abilities and football skills. This year’s CFL draft is slated for May 6th.

Hubbeard, a native of Peterborough, Ont., comments, “I am really looking forward to the CFL combine. It is a goal that I set for myself before this season. I am very grateful for StFX making this a possibility for me.”

“I have trained very hard for the combine, and plan on performing well.”

A fourth-year Arts student who recently wrapped up his third year eligibility, Hubbeard was the 2012 AUS defensive player of the year, along with being honored as a CIS second team All-Canadian for his efforts on the grid iron this past season.

Hubbeard led the AUS conference in tackles with 59.5 (41 solo and 37 assisted tackles) in eight games played. His 41 solo tackles also led the league and his 2012 totals included 1.5 sacks and 10.0 tackles for a loss. Named an AUS all-star at linebacker for the second consecutive season, Brett also led the conference in tackles per game with an average of 7.4.

A participant in the 2012 East-West Bowl last spring, Hubbeard also had two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and was credited with five pass break-ups for the X-Men defense this year.

X-Men head coach Gary Waterman comments, "Brett Hubbeard has great football instinct and plays the game with passion.”

“Watching him improve from year to year has been fun. We are extremely proud of his accomplishments to date and wish him the best in his opportunity at the CFL combine."

Along with StFX’s Hubbeard, five other Atlantic University Sport athletes will be attending the CFL Combine next weekend, including four Saint Mary’s Huskies:  Brett Lauther (kicker), Neil King (defensive back), Kyle Norris (linebacker) and Matthew Albright (offensive lineman), along with Acadia Axemen defensive back Cameron Wade.
