Soccer X-Women start season with wins

The StFX X-Women (2-0) started the regular season in AUS soccer on a winning note with two weekend wins.

Sunday, in Sackville, New Brunswick, the blue and white scored two unanswered goals in a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the Mount Allison Mounties.

Claire Gibbons, a second-year defender from Ottawa, Ontario, tallied the winner in the 31st minute.

After Emily van Diepen opened the scoring for the Mounties in the sixth minute, Mary MacDonald tied it for the X-Women with her second goal of the season. The third-year wing from Kingston, Ontario, beat Tessa Ritchie in the seventh minute.

Fifth-year senior Maris Miller, of St. John's, Newfoundland, made two saves for the victory.

Freshman midfielder Margaux Fraser led the X-Women with three shots.

Saturday, on home turf at Oland Stadium, StFX exploded for four goals in the second half in a 4-0 win over the rival Saint Mary's Huskies.

"I am really proud [of the girls]. We have a lot of young talent this year. I am really excited," third-year forward Brianna Cuzzolino of Oakville, Ontario, said after the match.

Cuzzolino tallied back-to-back goals in the home opener.

After a scoreless opening half, MacDonald put the X-Women on the board in the 45th minute when she deposited the rebound of a shot from first-year midfielder Chloe Brennan of Brookside, Nova Scotia, behind Huskies' keeper Jackie Blank.

In the 48th minute, Cuzzolino scored her first goal, converting a pass from second-year defender Brittany Parks of Kennetcook, Nova Scotia.

On her second marker, Cuzzolino converted a nifty give-and-go with MacDonald in the 61st minute.

Brennan rounded out the scoring with a deft left-footed shot in the 64th minute.

Her twin sister, Elise, a freshman defender, earned Subway player of the game honours.

Erin Visser, a freshman from Whitby, Ontario, made two saves for the shutout in her AUS debut.

The X-Women recorded 16 shots in the match.

"He told us to keep our cool. We were nervous," Cuzzolino said of head coach Graham Kennedy's words after the scoreless first half.

"He said he had confidence in us," she added.

The X-Women return to action Sunday, Sept. 14, when they travel to Charlottetown to face the UPEI Panthers.

The next home match for StFX is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 21, against the Dalhousie Tigers, beginning at 1 p.m.
