X-Women wrap up play in inaugural Ross Screenprint Invitational

Huskies capture inaugural Ross Screenprint Invitational title

Antigonish, NS - With a 3-0 round robin record, the Saint Mary's Huskies skated to the championship in the inaugural Ross Screenprint X-Women Invitational tournament.

The Huskies clinched the crown Saturday afternoon, at the StFX Keating Centre, with a 2-1 victory over the host X-Women (2-1).

In the second period, StFX opened the scoring on a marker by junior forward Daley Oddy (Cranbrook, BC), with assists from sophomore Sarah Bujold (Riverview, NB) and fifth-year senior Kara Power (New Glasgow, NS).

Ten seconds later, Saint Mary's evened the contest when Breanna Lanceleve (Middle Sackville, NS) tallied from Laura Polak (Bedford, NS) and Hayley Hallihan (Miramichi, NB).

At 3:48 of the third period, Huskies player of the game Rebecca Johnson (Stoney Creek, ON) scored what proved to be the game-winner, from Haylee Tretiak (Teulon, MB) and Sarah Douglas (Whitby, ON).

Rebecca Weagle (Lunenburg, NS) made 16 saves for the win, while Sojung Shin (Seoul, Korea) turned aside 21 shots in the loss.

Oddy received player of the game honors for the X-Women.

In the round robin format, each team earned three points for a regulation win, two for an overtime victory and one for an overtime loss.

Stingers edge Warriors

In the first game Saturday, the Waterloo Warriors (0-2-0-1) and Concordia Stingers (1-1-0-1) wrapped up their tournaments, with the Stingers earning a 2-1 victory.

Keriann Schofield (Wolfville, NS) gave the Stingers a 1-0 lead in the first period, on the power play, with Devon Thompson (Châteauguay, QC) and C. Dubois collecting assists.

Later in the first period, Tegan Odland (Enchant, AB) tied the game for the Warriors, on an assist from Courtney Simpson (Komoka, ON).

In the second period, Tracy-Ann Lavigne (Montreal, QC) scored the game-winner, from Dubois and Jillian Ferguson (Bathurst, NB).

Briar Bache (Barrie, ON) made 11 saves for the victory, while Stephanie Sluys (Clinton, ON) turned aside 25 shots.

Back in action

The X-Women return to pre-season action next weekend with a pair of road games versus AUS rivals.

StFX will face the Huskies Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m., in Halifax, while Saturday, Oct. 3, at 3 p.m., their opponent will be the Dalhousie Tigers.
