StFX's Normore, UNB's Shantz honoured
Normore, a fifth-year human kinetics student from Bedford, N.S., tallied six points in two games last weekend to set a school record for career points and become only the fourth player in CIS women's hockey history to reach the 200-point plateau. The 5-foot-7 forward scored the game-winning goal and added an assist on Friday in a 5-1 win over Saint Mary's, and then was in on all four of her team's markers on Sunday (1-3-4) as the nationally sixth-ranked X-Women defeated St. Thomas 4-2. Normore now has 200 points (78-122-200) in 111 career contests, four better than previous StFX record-holder Brayden Ferguson, and trails only Mariève Provost of Moncton (220), Tarin Podloski of Alberta (213) and Danielle Bourgeois of Alberta (212) on the CIS all-time list.
Montreal swimmer Sandrine Mainville, Wilfrid Laurier basketball player Kaitlyn Schenck and Manitoba hockey player Alanna Sharman were also nominated for the women's award.
Shantz, a fourth-year arts student from Hamilton, stopped 72 of 74 shots (97.3%) and posted his first career AUS shutout as the No. 2 Varsity Reds (17-2-2) extended their winning streak to nine games thanks to three victories in four nights. The 6-foot-2 netminder made 25 saves last Wednesday in a 6-1 win over St. Thomas, turned aside 20 pucks on Friday in a 3-0 blanking of StFX and blocked 27 shots on Saturday in a 3-1 success against No. 7 Saint Mary's. Shantz improved his season record to 15-4, including wins in each of his last eight starts.
Basketball players François Bourque of McGill, Tychon Carter-Newman of Laurentian and Mamadou Gueye of Alberta were the other male nominees.
