Hockey X-Women beat Panthers on home ice

Antigonish, NS - The CIS #9 ranked StFX X-Women notched their tenth consecutive win with a 3-1 victory over the visiting UPEI Panthers Saturday afternoon at the Keating Centre.

Freshman Sarah Bujold (Riverview, NB) opened the scoring for the X-Women. She beat Marie-Soleil Deschenes (Ile-Perrot, QC) with a one-timer from just inside the blue-line off a drop pass from Jenna MacDonald (Osgood, ON) at the 1:38 mark.

"We did pretty well in their zone," Bujold said in the first intermission.

Less than two minutes later, at 3:24, Emma Weatherbie (Brampton, ON) knotted the game. After taking a lead pass from Panther captain Ferran Brown (Calgary, AB), she roofed a shot over the right shoulder of X-Women goaltender Pascale Daigle (Irishtown, NB). Laura Bradley (Morell, PE) garnered the other assist.

The X-Women scored the only two goals of the second period.

At 6:17, on the powerplay, fifth-year senior Jenna Downey (Stratford, ON) deposited a rebound behind Deschenes. Schyler Campbell (Galloway, NB) and Taylor Dale (Oromocto, NB) collected assists on the goal.

In the closing minutes of the period, after extended pressure by the X-Women's top line of Kara Power (New Glasgow, NS), Alex Normore (Bedford, NS) and Daley Oddy (Cranbrook, BC), Power beat Deschenes after taking a goalmouth pass from Normore. Oddy also scored an assist.

"We were buzzing around on that shift. We had a great cycle and we were getting shots, and I was able to put one in," Power said in the second intermission.

The teams skated to a scoreless third period.

Daigle made 15 saves for the win, while Deschenes turned aside 29 shots in the loss.

The three stars were MacDonald, Daigle and Laura Bradley (Morell, PE)

The X-Women (10-1) return to action Sunday, Nov. 23 when they face the rival Saint Mary's Huskies (4-6-1) in Halifax. Game time is 2 p.m.
