Normore scores shorthanded OT winner for X-Women

ANTIGONISH, NS - With a shorthanded goal in overtime, CIS All-Canadian Alex Normore (Bedford, NS) gave the StFX X-Women a dramatic 1-0 victory over the visiting Mount Allison Mounties Saturday afternoon.

More than 200 fans at the Charles V. Keating Centre watched as the fifth-year senior tallied at the 8:20 mark of the extra session. Her scoring attempt on the rush beat Megan Colpitts (Riverview, NB) five-hole.

"We had a pretty good game; our legs were a little heavy, but we kept working and we were able to pull it out," Normore, who had 10 shots on goal, said after the game.

Colpitts, who made 40 saves, stole the show for most of the contest, making countless stops of the highlight-reel variety.

Earlier in overtime, the X-Women thought they had the victory when captain Taylor Dale (Oromocto, NB) beat Colpitts on a screen shot, but Schyler Campbell (Galloway, NB) was called for goalie interference, which negated the marker.

A couple minutes before the Normore winner, X-Women goaltender Pascale Daigle (Irishtown, NB) made back-to-back pad saves on Mackenzie Lalonde (Halifax, NS) to preserve the scoreless tie.

Daigle turned aside 30 shots for the shutout and her second win in as many days.

"She was outstanding," Normore said of Daigle, noting the X-Women have to clean-up some things in the defensive zone.

"We have a great work ethic this season, so we are going to only get better," she added.

StFX was without defenders Jenna Downey (Stratford, ON) and Jaelei Meyer (Carlyle, SK), who are also members of the X-Women rugby team, which is seeking a conference title this weekend in the Subway AUS Championships at Acadia University in Wolfville.

The X-Women outshot the Mounties 12-4 in the 10-minute, four-on-four overtime period.

Emily van Diepen (Morell, PEI) and captain Kristen Cooze (Kippens, NL) led Mount Allison with four shots apiece.

The three stars of the game were Normore, Colpitts and Daigle.

The X-Women (3-1) home game marked the team's Pink the Rink fundraiser, with the players donning pink jerseys. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit Cathy's Place – the cancer resource room at St. Martha's Regional Hospital in Antigonish.

The Mounties (0-3) return to the ice tomorrow (Sunday, Oct. 26) when they visit the Saint Mary's Huskies in Halifax.

StFX will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 1, when they host the St. Thomas Tommies. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at the Keating Centre.
