X-Women fall to Tommies in shootout

Fredericton, NB - The St. Thomas Tommies skated to a 3-2 shootout victory over the CIS ranked No. 8 StFX X-Women Friday evening at the Grant Harvey Center.

Jenna Scott scored the lone goal in the shootout to give the Tommies (8-7-4) the home ice win and Kristin Wolfe recorded 39 saves on goal.

The Tommies pulled off the win despite being outshot 41-28 by the X-Women who continue to struggle in the second half of the season.

StFX (13-3-2) hold onto their first place standing in the AUS conference but have a 2-5 record in regular season play dating back to November 30th.

The Tommies and X-Women exchanged first period goals as Subway player of the game Kelty Apperson opened the scoring for St. Thomas eight minutes into the game, from Katie Brewster.

Freshman forward Connor Garagan tied it up at 9:17 with Cate Civaterese.

The 1-1 deadlock held for the remainder of the first period and through to the end of the second as the teams were held scoreless in the middle frame.

Daley Oddy scored the go-ahead goal for StFX at 6:08 of the third period while on the power play. Jenna Pitts assisted.

Apperson netted her second of the game to notch the equalizer with 1:41 left on the clock. Caley Steinert and Brewster picked up the helpers on the tying goal which sent the game to overtime.

After the extra period decided nothing, the game was decided by the shootout and Scott's game winning goal.

Wolfe picked up the win in the Tommies net with 398 saves, while Sojung Shin took the loss for the X-Women, turning aside 25 pucks.

Both StFX and St. Thomas are off for the remainder of the weekend. The game originally scheduled between StFX and Mount Allison in Sackville for January 25th has been rescheduled for February 9th.

The X-Women will play their next AUS game on Saturday, February 1st as they host the Moncton Aigles Blueses (9-8-1) in a 7:00 pm start time at the Keating Centre.

The Tommies will play at Dalhousie (5-12-2) on Friday, January 31st at 7pm.
