CIS Men's Hockey Top 10 (#10)
Dinos remain No. 1 in first rankings of winter

Jan. 7, 2014

OTTAWA (CIS) – The University of Calgary Dinos reached the top of the CIS men's hockey rankings for the first time in 17 years before the December break, and they maintain their No. 1 status in the first national poll of 2014.

The Dinos (15-0-1) received 15 first-place votes and 166 points this week from the 17-member media panel to remain ahead of the No. 2 Alberta Golden Bears (14-2-0), No. 3 Acadia Axemen (13-1-2) and No. 4 UNB Varsity Reds (12-3-1).

Alberta and Acadia both earned one first-place nod and received 152 and 140 points from the panel, respectively, while reigning University Cup champion UNB tallied 114 points.

Rounding out the 10th poll of the season behind the "Big Four" are the No. 5 Lakehead Thunderwolves (13-3 / up two positions), No. 6 McGill Redmen (12-4-1 / down one), No. 7 Queen's Gaels (12-0-5 / up one), No. 8 UQTR Patriotes (11-4-0 / down two), No. 9 Carleton Ravens (11-5-1 / previously unranked) and No. 10 Ryerson Rams (12-5-0 / no change).

Calgary and Alberta resume their Canada West schedule later this week with two-game sets against Lethbridge and Saskatchewan, respectively. Both teams hit the ice for non-conference action last weekend with the Dinos splitting a doubleheader against cross-town rival Mount Royal (4-1, 3-6) and the Bears posting a pair of wins over NAIT of the ACAC (4-2, 6-1).

In the AUS conference, Acadia resumed league play with dominating road victories over St. Thomas, 9-1, and UPEI, 5-2, while UNB suffered a surprising 7-2 loss at the hands of StFX on Saturday before rebounding with a 6-4 win over Saint Mary's on Sunday.

Three Top-10 matchups are on the CIS schedule this week, all involving OUA East teams.

McGill and UQTR get things started Tuesday night in Trois-Rivières, Que. Then, on the weekend, Queen's, one of two teams in the country (with Calgary) that have yet to suffer a regulation loss in regular season action, hosts Carleton on Friday and McGill on Saturday.
