Hockey X-Women lose two
The hockey X-Women dropped two games on the road this past weekend with a 2-1 loss to Moncton and a 4-1 loss to St. Thomas.
\r\nOn Friday night the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues kept their unbeaten steak alive with a close 2-1 victory over the X-Women. Joanie Dubois opened the scoring in the game with a power play goal at 16:15 of the first period, despite the X-Women out shooting the Aigles Bleues 15-6 in the opening frame.
\r\nCarolyn Campbell of StFX scored an equalizing power play goal on a pass from Laura Grant at 16:04 of the second period. Both teams remained scoreless until 16:36 of the third period when Janie LeBlanc of the Aigles Bleues broke the tie with the go-ahead and game winning goal.
\r\nKathy Desjardins made 30 saves in nets for the Aigles Bleues who were out shot 31-20 by the X-Women in the game. Katie Harvieux took the loss for the X-Women.
\r\nSaturday afternoon in Fredericton, the X-Women faced a tough St. Thomas Tommies squad who handed them a 4-1 loss.
\r\nLindsay Brown of the X-Women opened the scoring with a first period goal at the 14:06 minute mark, but special teams proved to be a factor as the Tommies went on to score four unanswered goals, two of them on the power play.
\r\nGoals came from the sticks of Jessica Holt, Lyse Rossignol, Kayla Blackmore and Jillian Coughlin. The Tommies were 2 for 3 on the power play while the X-Women were 0 for 4.
\r\nShots were fairly even at 27-26 in favor of the Tommies. Julia Sharun earned the win in nets for St. Thomas, while Katie Harvieux took the loss for X, after being relieved in the second period by Melissa Murphy.
\r\nThe X-Women currently sit in second place in the AUS standings (5-2-1) behind the Aigles Bleues. They will host the seventh place UPEI Panthers (2-5-0) on Friday night at 7pm at the Keating Centre, while third place St. Thomas (4-2-1) will be in town Sunday afternoon for a re-match at 2:00 pm.
