X-Women hockey split weekend home games
The X-Women hockey team had a win and a loss over the weekend in their first regular season home games. StFX beat Mount Allison 3-0 on Saturday, but fell just short in overtime to the Universite de Moncton on Sunday, losing 3-2.
\r\nOn Saturday, StFX got off to a great start by scoring just 1:21 into the game on a power play goal by Carolyn Campbell. Jessica Shanahan would add another power play late in the first period. Shanahan would finish with a goal and an assist while Christina Davis had two assists. Brayden Ferguson had the other goal for X and Melissa Murphy only had to make eight saves for the shutout. StFX out shot the Mounties 44-8.
\r\nOn Sunday, the X-Women would see their 32-game AUS winning streak come to an end at the hands of les Aigles Bleues. Special teams were the name of this game as four out the five goals scored were on the power play or penalty kill.
\r\nChristina Davis got X on the board first with a great tip in front of the net. The goal came on the power play about halfway through the 1st frame. Ferguson would extend the lead to 2-0 in the 2nd when she raced in alone and put home a backhand. Moncton would respond late in the 2nd on a power play goal by Joanie Dubois.
\r\nIn the third, a crazy bounce off the glass behind the StFX net allowed Dubois to score her second goal of the game. The teams would trade chances in the third but the game went to overtime.
\r\nIn overtime, StFX’s Kelly Boudreau took a body checking penalty late in the period and Moncton capitalized with Valerie Boisclair scoring the overtime winner. Boisclair finished with a goal and an assist and Kathy Desjardins got the win in goal. Katie Harvieux took the loss for the X-Women.
\r\nStFX now stands at 3-0-1 on the season. The X-Women will host the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Wednesday October 29 at 7 pm AST. This game will be webcast live from the Keating Centre.
