Hockey X-Women open with wins

The reigning AUS champion X-Women hockey team opened regular season play with a pair of victories over the weekend. Saturday in Sackville, NB the X-Women defeated the Mount Allison Mounties by a 3-2 score, and Sunday in PEI they earned a 5-1 victory at the hands of the UPEI Panthers.
Against the Mounties, Brayden Ferguson opened the scoring for the X-Women with a first period goal and Laura Lighthall evened it up with a power play marker for Mount A at 18:50. Jessica Shanahan pulled the X-Women ahead with a power play goal of her own 9:03 into the second period and Christina Davis added to the lead with a third period goal. Rounding out the scoring was Katelyn Morton of the Mounties with a late game power play goal.
The X-Women out shot the Mounties by a 46-19 margin. Goaltender Alison Heard had 43 saves for Mount A in the losing effort, while Melissa Murphy earned the win in nets for the X-Women.
On Saturday in PEI, Carolyn Campbell scored two goals for the X-Women in their 5-1 win over the Panthers. Also scoring for X were Nicole Hansom, Jessica Shanahan and Christina Davis, while Marilynn Hay had 3 assists in the game. Kelsey O'Donnell scored the lone marker for UPEI. Katie Harvieux earned the win in nets for the X-Women who out shot the Panthers by a 33-15 margin. Kate Read took the loss for UPEI.
The X-Women will be playing their home opener on Saturday, Oct. 25 when they host Mount Allison at 2:00 pm. They will also host the Universite de Moncton on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
